To distinguish Penguin books from other publications, Edward Young, a 21-year-old office junior, was given the task of designing a distinctive and recognisable cover. Young came up with the idea of using a simple, colour design with horizontal bands.

The first Penguin book, "Ariel" by André Maurois, was released on July 30, 1935, and had a tripartite cover design with horizontal bands of colour – orange for fiction, green for crime, and blue for biography. Pelican Books, a non-fiction imprint of Penguin, was established in 1937, expanding the publisher's focus to include educational and informative works.
